Story of Ambition
The cars of the 1980s were predominantly boxy with rigid, austere interiors. Fuel efficiency and safety were the primary focus of manufacturers across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Within this highly competitive environment, Lexus sought to create the “best car in the world,” a lofty—and seemingly unattainable—goal.
The chief engineer at the time, Ichiro Suzuki, sought to create the quintessential luxury vehicle. When Lexus unveiled the LS 400 in 1989, they changed the game.
